Dans la France d'après les attentats de 2015, Mounir, parisien homosexuel de 40 ans d'origine marocaine, vit dans une situation précaire. Il vient d'emménager dans un appartement rue de Turenne. Madame Marty, une vieille dame de 80 ans, survit difficilement au-dessus de chez lui dans un minuscule studio. L'amitié entre ces deux exclus de la République s'intensifie jusqu'au jour où elle vire au cauchemar.
Les affrontements et les déchirements s'enchaînent. Excédée, madame Marty appelle la police pour arrêter Mounir. Antoine, le commissaire qui interroge je jeune homme, le soupçonne de liens avec les djihadistes. Mais Antoine existe-t-il vraiment? Où passe la frontière entre le vrai et l'imaginaire? Un roman de rupture. Né en 1973 à Rabat, Abdellah Taïa a publié aux Editions du Seuil plusieurs romans, traduits en Europe et aux USA, dont Le Jour du Roi (prix de Flore 2010) et Celui qui est digne d'être aimé (2017).
Il a réalisé en 2014 son premier film, L'Armée du Salut (Grand Prix du Festival d'Angers), d'après son roman éponyme.
